Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux, often referred to as heartburn, is a common complaint that has people reaching for the occasional antacid. Reflux refers to the backflow of stomach contents into the oesophagus which causes the burning sensation and pain in the stomach and chest typical of heartburn. For most people, occasional heartburn can be managed by using antacid medications or herbs, however when heartburn becomes a daily occurrence, continued use of antacids may no longer be an effective or desirable method of treatment.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease or (GORD) refers to these people in which heartburn is a daily complaint. Oesophagitis (Inflammation of the oesophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach) is a common complication of prolonged reflux and can be a considerable cause of discomfort. Oesophagitis, if not managed, can also have long term consequences including infection of the oesophagus or cancerous changes to the cells lining the oesophageal wall.

Perhaps the most important part of managing symptoms of GORD should be through dietary and lifestyle modifications. For example, smoking, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, fatty and spicy foods can increase the risk of GORD and should be avoided in susceptible individuals. Eating too quickly and not thoroughly chewing food will also increase the severity of GORD, as will eating very large meals. Being overweight will also increase risk of GORD so it is important to lose weight if you are over your ideal.

Other important dietary hints include avoiding carbonated drinks, chewing gum, sucking lollies, peppermint and spearmint and eating small frequent meals rather than large meals. If reflux is a problem for you, stressful situations should be avoided, especially around meal times and it is also helpful to avoid wearing tight clothes around the abdomen. Avoid physical exertion directly after eating and wait three hours before lying down after your evening meal. When all of these suggestions are put into place, people will often have a huge improvement in the symptoms of GORD, however, the following supplements can also be a great help.

Slippery elms is a great herb that by reducing inflammation and improving digestion can soothe the burning pain of GORD and assist healing. Acidophilus and other beneficial bacteria will help to rebalance the bacteria levels in the digestive system, improving digestive function. Digestive enzymes can be a great help to GORD sufferers as they assist the breakdown and absorption of food, moving it through the stomach more effectively.

If you would like any more information about GORD, don't hesitate to speak to one of our Naturopaths today. Alternatively, if you would like an individualised treatment plan for you, arrange to have a consultation.

A Word on Eggs

Olive leafThe humble egg has been the source of much scrutiny because of naturally occuring cholesterol but studies have shown that eating eggs regularly (2eggs a day for 6 weeks) had no effect on blood cholesterol.

Eggs are a great source of low-calorie protein as well as many important vitamins and minerals including choline, vitamins B2, B5, B12 and D, iodine and selenium to name but a few.

Eggs are also an excellent source of the vision-protective carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In fact, studies have found that an egg a day boosts blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, thus reducing the risk of AMD-without increasing cholesterol or triglyceride levels. These finding make eggs and excellent addition to any meal!

Remedies from the beehive... by Fern

beehiveGrowing up with a beekeeper father meant that most of the medicines our family used came straight from the beehive. My parents used honey, honeycomb, bee pollen, propolis and Royal Jelly to ward off just about every ailment that made its way into our home. Honey and Propolis remain two of my favourite remedies for a wide range of conditions.

Propolis is a greenish-brown sticky substance found in the beehive. Honeybees gather the resin from certain trees on their back legs and carry it to the hive where it is mixed with enzymes and beeswax to make Propolis. Propolis sterilizes and seals the hive, protecting it from bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Just as Propolis protects the hive from infections, it can also be an invaluable tool for protecting us from infection. Coughs and colds can be caused by foreign viruses and bacteria and we rely on our immune systems to fight these off and keep us well. Propolis has immunostimulant properties as well as being antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral and as such can help our immune systems work more effectively to destroy foreign invaders. Propolis also has a soothing and cooling action which helps explain why people with sore throats have taken it for centuries. The anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic (numbing) properties of Propolis are likely to be responsible for this action and also explain its usefulness in treating gastrointestinal infections, diverticulitis, mouth ulcers, duodenal ulcers and tonsillitis.

Propolis is available as a tincture and in tablet or capsule form although as a child I can remember being given the sticky resin to chew, straight from the hive, on several occasions!

Honey is another of nature's great defenses, Manuka honey in particular. "Manuka" refers to a small tree native to New Zealand and honey produced from this tree contains an extra antibacterial component compared to honey produced from other trees.

The antibacterial activity of Manuka Honey means that it can be useful to treat a variety of problems. Eating the honey can help relieve stomach ulcer and mouth ulcer symptoms, aid sensitive digestion, maintain a healthy intestinal bacteria balance, soothe sore throats, aid oral hygiene and enhance general health. Manuka honey is also ideal for woundcare. It provides antibacterial environment against many of the common wound infecting bacteria and a moist environment to assist healing. Using Manuka on minor wounds, burns, cuts, scrapes and ulcers is believed to reduce infection, assist tissue growth, reduce scarring and assist healing.

We now have an excellent range of products containing both Propolis and Manuka Honey. This Winer Wellness range is specially formulated to treat cough, cold and sore throat but can also be a great preventative treatment. For more information about these products or about our Manuka woundcare range, please come in and see us.
