Co-Enzyme Q10
Some cholesterol medications can reduce more than just cholesterol
There is evidence showing that some cholesterol medications may cause depletion of
co-enzyme Q10 in the body.
Co-enzyme Q10 is valuable to cardiovascular health!
One of the highest concentrations of this vitamin-like nutrient is found in the heart where its action in the mitochondria is important to its healthy function. Supplementing the diet with additional Co-enzyme Q10 may benefit in maintaining the body’s co-enzyme Q10 levels, which may be depleted due to cholesterol medications. It may also improve cardiovascular health and maintain energy levels.
It is important to see your doctor if you are considering using
Co-enzyme Q10 and are taking other medications.
Co-enzyme Q10 comes in 50mg and 100mg doses and will cost you approximately $1 - $1.60 a day.

Weight Loss
Why is weight loss important?-
Overweight people are more likely to have heart disease, diabetes, heartburn or gastric reflux, and gallstones. In very obese people breathing may be very difficult, particularly at night when sleeping.
-
Reducing weight to the healthy range reduces most of the above risks.
-
Life expectancy is generally reduced in obese people.
-
Maintaining a healthy weight also makes exercise and movement easier. Exercise is also important in maintaining a healthy body and reducing the risk of some diseases.
Non-Medicine therapy for weight loss
There is no easy way to lose weight. A gradual weight loss of 0.5 - 1kg per week is optimal weight loss. It takes a long time for weight to be put on, and the most lasting way to lose weight is to do it gradually, and let the new lifestyle become the healthy habit.
Beware of products, which advertise no effort or exercise required, miracle ingredients in special supplements that speed up metabolism or burn fat, rapid, major weight loss, very restrictive or limited variety of food diets, or other fad diets.
A change in lifestyle is usually necessary to sustain weight loss - this involves increased activity and different eating habits.
Fat should not provide more than 30% of the total energy calorie intake, and generally should be less than 30g a day. It is important to reduce calories and fat intake as well as eating less food generally. Fat has 9 calories per gram while sugar or carbohydrates have only around 3 calories per gram.
The Heart Foundation of Australia has excellent leaflets showing the ideal food pyramid, indicating the importance of a variety of foods. Our main energy (calorie) intake should be from vegetables, fruit and complex carbohydrates such as cereals, breads, pasta and rice.
Exercise helps maintain body weight, reduces risk of heart disease, improves mental well-being and can provide relaxation and enjoyment.
Natural Medicines to relieve the symptoms of Hay Fever
Horseradish and Fenugreek - useful in clearing mucous, reducing swelling and relieving allergic symptoms.
Garlic - exhibits a natural antibiotic activity which can be useful to prevent infections from developing in the sinuses.
Golden Seal - is a herb that has antibacterial properties and relieves congestion whilst nourishing the mucous membranes.
Vitamin C, Zinc, Vitamin A and beta carotene - all support the immune system and can reduce allergies. Vitamin A also has important roles in keeping the surfaces of the respiratory tract healthy and resistant to infection.
L-Lysine for Cold Sores
It is always cold sore season as there is as yet no known cure. However, there is a natural product, supported by scientific research, which helps to reduce the frequency and severity of cold sore outbreaks. It is L-Lysine, an essential amino acid.
So how does Lysine work? Cold sores are caused by an infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV) http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au. The Herpes virus requires another amino acid, Arginine, to grow. In vitro (cell culture) research has shown that lysine can inhibit growth of the herpes simplex virus. Griffith and DeLong et al: Chemotherapy. 1981, 27(3):209-13. It is believed that Lysine competes with arginine and antagonises its growth promoting action on the cold sore virus. The growth of the herpes virus in cell culture with arginine present was inhibited by the addition of lysine. Without arginine, the virus did not grow at all.
Flaxseed Oil - Omega 3
The growing body of research supporting the supplementation of our diets with either food or supplements rich in Omega 3 has seen a surge in the demand for fish oil supplements. But there is an alternative for those who are vegetarian or vegan or because they are allergic to fish oil or simply do not like fish.
Flaxseed oil comes from the seeds of the plant Linum Usitatissimum and is a source of Omega 3, 6 and 9. Flaxseed oil has a very high percentage (about 55 percent) of alphalinolenic acid (ALA), an omega -3 fatty acid. There is plenty of evidence for the anti-inflammatory effect of omega 3 fatty acids and for those choosing to use the vegetarian source, hight doses may be needed.
