Teething

Most babies begin teething between the ages of four to twelve months.

Signs of teething include:

  1. Irritability
  2. Excessive dribbling
  3. Red patches on cheeks
  4. Swollen and sore gums
  5. Unsettled sleeping habits
  6. Temporary loss of appetite
  7. Chewing and biting on anything

There are a number of things that can assist in helping babies during teething. These include teething rings, especially cooled in the fridge, are good for inflamed gums, giving the baby food to chew on such as celery, carrot or a rusk can also help.  Pharmacists can also advise parents on pain relievers and teething gels.

As teeth come in parents should start to introduce a toothbrush (toothpaste should only be used in babies over 12 months old). The toothbrush should be gently rubbed over the teeth and gum line daily.

First Teeth

A child’s first teeth are important for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are needed for chewing and speaking and more importantly they are needed to keep spaces for the permanent teeth. Permanent teeth are more likely to grow into their correct position if the first teeth are well looked after. First teeth, however, are more vulnerable to decay as the enamel is thinner than that of permanent teeth.bella

Initially, a parent should clean the child’s teeth until the child is old enough to do this themselves. The teeth should be wiped clean every day with a damp cloth. Once the child is a little older a soft bristled infant’s toothbrush should be used to gently brush all tooth surfaces.

Toothpaste should not be used until after twelve months old. As children will swallow their toothpaste, it is recommended that Colgate Junior toothpaste be used as it is low in fluoride. Excess fluoride can discolour permanent teeth.

A parent should continue to brush their child’s teeth once a day until they are approximately six years old. It has been found that a child does not have the skill to brush properly until this age. It is important to let them attempt to brush themselves and using disclosing tablets is a good way to check if they are brushing correctly. Disclosing tablets contain an approved food dye that stains the plaque so a child is able to see where they have missed. This is a fun way to teach a child to brush thoroughly.

Colic

bio oilFussing baby and unsettled infant are terms used for otherwise healthy babies less than three months old who cry excessively and cannot easily be consoled.

Infants with colic are classically unsettled in the late afternoon and evening period, and have the appearance of being in pain, with legs drawn up. Infant colic usually disappears by about 3 months of age.

Options to explore to control symptoms of colic include:

  1. Assessing the feeding technique to ensure adequate amounts and suitable posturing, and if bottle-fed, checking the temperature and dilution of the formula
  2. Finding a position the baby is comfortable with
  3. Riding the baby in the pram/car or sling
  4. Giving the baby a warm bath
  5. Structured routine for the baby
  6. Background noise

A number of products are available for the treatment of colic - come into one of our Pharmacies to speak to our expert staff.
